About This Video

In this video I compare IT Operations Manager vs IT Infrastructure Manager, and I do it the way I wish someone explained it to me when I was moving from being a tech into management. I start with the reality check: managers exist because someone has to set the stage, drive strategy, and be ultimately accountable when things go pear shaped. I’ve always loved tech, and even in senior management roles I’ve made it a goal to stay technical—because that spark is the reason I got into IT in the first place. Then I break down how these roles split as companies get bigger. The IT Operations Manager is focused on business-as-usual: keeping the lights on, looking after end users, onboarding/offboarding, ticket flow, SLAs, and often the service desk function. The IT Infrastructure Manager is more specialized and “level 3” focused—servers, networking, firewalls, storage, cloud, comms rooms, data centers, patching, and engineering decisions that impact uptime and scalability. Both roles still deal with incidents, security, governance, roadmaps, and budgets—but ops is typically more short-term and reactive, while infrastructure is more long-term and architectural. And in a perfect world, when infra is done right, ops ends up putting out way less fires.
