The panel is trying to confirm two big things: that you still know your tech (you live and breathe it, you’re up to date with what’s modern and trending), and that you can actually think like a manager. That means strategy, building a team, getting outcomes for the business, and being someone they can confidently put in front of a CEO or board. I break down the mix you’ll see in almost every IT Manager interview: behavioral questions and technical questions. On the behavioral side, I cover the staples like “tell me about yourself,” “what do you know about us,” conflict, failure, being thrown into unknown situations, and how you prioritize when everything is on fire—outages, escalations, customer complaints, even malware. On the technical side, I walk through the common areas interviewers probe: service desk and SLAs, Windows Server/AD, virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), storage (SAN vs NAS, RAID), cloud (AWS/Azure basics), and networking fundamentals (VLANs, firewalls, SD-WAN).
