In this video I’m breaking down the big question I get all the time: what server should you actually buy for a homelab on a budget in 2026—rack server, tower server, desktop, laptop, or a mini PC? Before you spend a single dollar, I walk you through the stuff most people skip: what you’re trying to build, whether this is a short-term tinkering lab or a long-term setup, and what the next 1–2 years looks like for you. Once you’ve got that plan, then we talk budget, space, noise, heat, and power—because yeah, someone has to pay that electricity bill. I compare mini PCs (cheap, quiet, “mini” performance), desktops (fine for basic lab work), tower servers (more server-grade features like more RAM capacity, RAID options, sometimes dual CPUs and dual PSUs), and full rack servers (the most power and expandability, but also the noisiest and hottest). I also share how I run my own environment: I use the small stuff day-to-day, and I only fire up the big rack gear when I need serious grunt—lots of VMs, heavy processing, or hosting something like a game server. My conclusion is simple: if you can handle noise and power, rack servers are awesome; if not, go smaller and be smart about what you’re building.
