The big takeaway is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get real hands-on experience: you can use old desktops, laptops, marketplace finds, and even older Cisco switches (think 2950/2960) to build something that still runs modern lab workloads. I show you how I rack everything into an 18RU cabinet, cable it cleanly, and power it up properly (and when you should consider PDUs instead of a basic power board). I also explain why I split network connections across two switches for redundancy/high availability, and how you can organize ports (even by VLANs) to keep things tidy and practical. From there, I break down the actual lab plan: ESXi on the three servers for virtualization, with VM storage living on the Synology NAS. That setup lets me spin up Windows Server and Linux VMs—domain controller, DNS, DHCP, file server, web server, LAMP stack—basically the exact kind of environment that maps to real IT jobs and interview conversations.
