Because a home lab is literally your personal testing ground—your place to build, break, demo, and learn without nuking production at work. In this video I break down what a home lab is, why it matters for IT beginners, and how it solves a real problem I ran into early on: I was help desk, I could fix PCs, but I wasn’t allowed to touch servers, switches, or the “fancy tech” in the data center. A lab at home is how you get that hands-on experience anyway. I walk through practical hardware ideas you can start with today: old desktops, laptops, a Mac Mini, or a small Intel NUC—anything you can repurpose into a server by installing Windows Server, Linux, or a hypervisor like VMware ESXi so you can run virtual machines. I also cover why switches matter (especially if you want to learn VLANs, subnets, and real network topology) and why enterprise gear like Cisco can be valuable for learning IOS. Finally, I talk storage—NAS/SAN concepts and why a NAS is a great place to put files or even host your VMs on the network.
