About This Video

In this video, I walk you through a quick privacy check on your Mac to make sure you haven’t unintentionally given apps access to two really sensitive things: your microphone and your camera. With privacy concerns being what they are, I think it’s smart to audit this every once in a while—especially if you’ve clicked “Allow” too fast in the past, or if kids have been using your computer and approving prompts without thinking. I start by going to System Settings (Apple icon > System Settings), then scrolling down the left side to Privacy & Security. From there, I show you exactly where to find the Microphone and Camera permission lists, and how to review which apps currently have access. If anything looks fishy or you simply don’t want an app to have access anymore, you can toggle it off. The next time that app tries to use your mic or camera, it’ll have to ask again. One important note: this permissions list doesn’t guarantee you’re malware-free, but it’s a really fast way to see what has permission to use those private features. It’s a basic check, but it can make a big difference in helping you feel more secure on your Mac.
