About This Video

In this quick Google Docs tutorial, I walk you through the simplest way to add page numbers to your document so it looks more professional and is way easier to follow—whether you’re reading it on a screen or printing it out. I’m using a super simple three-page Doc, but the same steps apply to longer stuff like reports, essays, or even a book where you want people to know exactly where they are and where they’re headed next. I show you exactly where to go (Format → Page numbers), then how to choose between numbering just the current page/section or the whole document (which is what I almost always do). We’ll pick the position—header or footer—and I’ll explain why I personally like the footer, while noting cases (like legal-style docs) where the top-right header can make sense. I also cover key options like hiding the number on the first page (great for title pages) and changing the starting number if your document needs to begin on page 3 instead of 1. Once it’s applied, Google Docs automatically updates page numbers as you add new pages, and you can always jump back in to edit or remove the footer/page numbers anytime.
