In this shop experiment I tried something I’ve seen around forever but never actually used: Plasti Dip® on bare, handle-less hand tools. I grabbed a handful of factory seconds—cable cutter, crimper, linesman’s, and diagonal cutters—cleaned the handles with brake clean to get the oil off, and then dipped one handle blue and the other yellow. The whole goal was simple: does this stuff actually make a usable grip, or is it just a messy gimmick? Spoiler: it’s not bad, but you’ve gotta respect the process. The biggest takeaway is speed matters. I had the best results going painfully slow—about an inch every five seconds—both going in and coming out, especially on the first coat. Blue covered thicker than yellow, and the yellow needed extra dips (I went up to three coats on a couple tools) to get rid of thin spots and show-through. I also learned what not to do: hit it with a blower and you’ll wrinkle the surface fast because the outside skins over while the inside is still wet. After everything dried, I checked the grip hardness with a Shore A durometer and landed around 91–93, with the thicker coats feeling a little gummier but not wildly different on the meter. Overall, the coating leveled pretty well, the zebra-striping issues can be managed, and for beat-up or bare handles this is a legit way to make tools nicer to use—just stir (don’t shake), dip slow, and plan on multiple coats.
