About This Video

In this March pop-up Live, I’m walking you through what you can direct seed into the garden right now and what I prefer to start as transplants. I garden in Maryland Zone 7, so you’ll need to adjust for your area, but the principles are the same: soil temperature is everything. I’m not chasing air temps or moon phases—I’m looking for that warming trend where nights are mostly above about 39°F (nothing really grows below that) and we’re trending into 45°F+ nights where cool-crop seeds start germinating reliably. I also cover why direct seeding fails (seeds sitting too long, swelling, then mold/fungus/insects getting them) and how to avoid it by waiting for the trend and not rushing. Then I get into succession planting—don’t dump 200 radish seeds in at once unless you want 200 radishes at once. Plant, wait for germination, then stagger your next sowings. I list my favorite March direct-seed crops (peas, radishes, carrots, spinach, arugula, plus lots more greens and roots), share which crops I usually don’t direct seed (broccoli/cauliflower/Brussels—transplants work better for timing), and remind you to harden off indoor seedlings because the sun can burn them fast.
