About This Video

In this video I’m showing you pea hacks that actually work for planting early when the ground is still cold. The big problem with peas is they can sit in cold soil for 2–4 weeks, swell up, and then molds or fungus move in and the seeds rot. So instead of waiting around (and sometimes ending up with nothing), I use two simple methods indoors to get peas germinated fast, then I get them outside as soon as the soil can be worked. I also show you growing proof from my garden so you can see the results, not just hear the idea. First is my paper towel pre-sprout method: I germinate peas in a damp paper towel inside a Ziploc bag for about 5–7 days, just until the first small root breaks out. Then I trench plant them about 1 inch deep, roughly 1 inch apart, and let the pea correct itself—root down, greenery up. Second is the 6-cell “cut bottom” method where I start peas in seed cells, cut the bottoms out so the roots don’t shear off, and transplant them while they’re still small. The takeaway is simple: it’s all about intact roots and avoiding that long cold-soil wait so you get peas sooner to the table.
