About This Video

In this video I show you my double foil tray seed starting method, and it’s one of the easiest ways to save space and money when you’re starting transplants indoors. The setup is simple: two foil baking trays—one tray holds the seed starting mix (with drainage holes), and the bottom tray holds the water so you can bottom-water and let everything wick up evenly. I focus on peppers and tomatoes (eggplant works great too), and I show you how spacing changes everything—pack in close to 40 plants if you want, or stick to about 20 plants in a tray if you don’t want to pot up. I also cover timing and what actually matters for success. For me, peppers are best at about 8–10 weeks from germination, and tomatoes are usually 4–6 weeks. The key isn’t huge top growth—it’s building a strong root system and then getting those roots into warm soil. And I really stress acclimating your plants before they go outside, because indoor-grown seedlings lose UV resistance and the sun can wipe them out fast if you skip hardening off. I finish with my watering/fertilizing routine, labeling tips, and the seed starting mix recipe I recommend (no shredded wood—ever).
