In this Garden Ramblings episode (Feb 10, Maryland Zone 7), I walk you through what I’m growing indoors while my outdoor garden and greenhouse are basically frozen in. I show you how I use a south-facing window for larger “food crops” that don’t need 16 hours of grow lights—things like Tiny Tim tomatoes, spinach (about 12 weeks old and starting to flower), and even peas grown for tender tendrils you can snip into salads. I also share why bigger plants can handle that direct sun better, and how moving older transplants to a bright window frees up space under your lights. Then I head over to my redesigned seed-starting/grow station and talk about what you can still start now: peppers (I like 10–12 weeks), onions (scatter seeds thick and bottom water for great starts), and lots of cool crops like lettuce, kale, collards, chard, spinach, and broccoli rabe as my “broccoli substitute” for spring. I also get into my indoor mushroom experiments—oyster mycelium colonizing wood pellets and spent blocks—plus my favorite “don’t stress” reminders: you’re not behind, don’t put warm crops into cold soil, and use succession planting so you’re not trying to eat 25 heads of lettuce in one week.
