In this video I show you how I make a premium seed starting and potting-up mix using two off-the-shelf products: a 12-quart bag of Jiffy Mix (peat-based with vermiculite and lime) and a 100% coco coir brick that expands to about 8 quarts. I’ve started a ton of my seeds in straight Jiffy Mix and it works great—nice, loose, fluffy, and it holds moisture. But it can stay wet a little too long under grow lights, which can lead to algae on top (it doesn’t really hurt plants, but it worries people), and when you’re potting up it’s often nicer if the mix dries a bit faster. Blending peat-based mix with coco coir gives you a better balance. The top dries down more easily, which helps reduce fungus issues and damping off risk, while still holding enough water for consistent germination. My ratio is basically 12 quarts Jiffy Mix to 8 quarts coir (about 3:2), and it expands to 20+ quarts for roughly $12–$14 if you buy smart (big box store for Jiffy Mix). I also walk you through using boiling water and covering the container with foil to help kill fungus gnat eggs that can come in peat, and I explain exactly what to avoid: any seed starting or potting mix that lists forestry product/processed wood/shredded wood—don’t waste your money on that stuff.
