In this video, I break down something that genuinely changed how I think about Big Tech and privacy: Meta (Facebook) runs its entire server infrastructure on Linux—zero Windows servers. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of machines powering Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp for roughly 3.5 billion daily users, all on Linux. And that contrast is what made me ask the uncomfortable question: if Windows isn’t good enough for their own operations, why is it the platform so many of us use while being tracked? I explain the real differences that matter—permissions, control, and telemetry. On Linux, things are locked down by default, permissions are more granular, and apps are easier to sandbox so they only access what you explicitly allow. Windows is built more for convenience, so people click “accept” on long permission lists, and that makes it easier for apps to access things like camera/mic, location, contacts, background activity, and diagnostics (telemetry). Then I get into why Silicon Valley loves Linux for servers: open-source transparency, deep customization (even kernel-level), performance/efficiency without unnecessary extras, and the fact that Linux is free—saving massive licensing costs at scale.
