For decades, PC gaming meant Windows, and Linux gaming was a meme. Then the Steam Deck showed up running SteamOS (Linux), sold millions of units, and suddenly a huge chunk of gamers are playing without Windows at all. I go through the reports and why this matters beyond “lost sales.” SteamOS + Proton is the real game-changer: thousands of Windows games just work, and we’re talking roughly 80–90% of the Steam library. In a lot of cases, games can feel smoother too: better frame pacing, less stutter, and less OS bloat getting in the way. Meanwhile Windows 11 keeps stacking ads, forced features, and telemetry on top of gaming. My takeaway: this is about control. Valve proved you can ship a gaming-focused OS that doesn’t suck, and that’s Microsoft’s nightmare scenario.
