I’m a huge coffee drinker, and I’ll try just about any method—pour over, French press, cowboy coffee… even the single-serve freeze dried stuff. In this video I put the OXO Outdoor Rapid Brewer under the microscope because on paper it looks like it’s trying to play in AeroPress territory. And I wanted to love it. But once you start looking at the details that matter in the field, it’s pretty clear it’s not an AeroPress killer. The big issues for me are the “why would you do it that way?” design choices. The AeroPress has features I consider standard—like a removable stainless steel screen that makes cleaning simple. The OXO’s screen is non-removable, which means cleaning is going to be a chore, especially when you’re camping and water is limited. On top of that, it comes with a little carafe, but it’s not marked for volume. So if you’re making concentrate, how many carafes do you need to dilute to an 8oz, 16oz, or 32oz cup? The world may never know. Yes, it’s cheaper than an AeroPress—but that discounted price shows. If you want simple, repeatable coffee with easy cleanup, the AeroPress still wins for me.
