I had a tough time getting my ideas out for this one... hope you got some of them! Thanks so much for watching this video :) -- It was awesome to finally visit the new museum. And my visit was made even better because the Hayao Miyazaki exhibition is actually on display right now (i guess going with my bro who also loves films is pretty cool too 🤣). If the name Hayao Miyazaki is unfamiliar to you, you probably have heard of Ghibli studio or films like Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle. Miyazaki is the co-founder of Ghibli studio and the director of many Ghibli studio films. I couldn’t take you inside the exhibit since they didn’t allow any photography or videography but it was a beautiful exhibit featuring tons of original imageboards, character designs, storyboards, layouts, backgrounds, posters, and cels from Studio Ghibli’s archives. It highlighted some of the major themes within Miyazaki’s films. It’s not hard to see reoccurring themes from watching his movies, but after learning more about his views and philosophies, it gave the films more depth and even more interesting to watch. This is the reason why I loved all those film classes I took in college. There’s so much depth to the films we love, and we’d miss these opportunities if we don’t bother to dig a little deeper. It’s so much more fun than being a passive consumer of content. The museum is huge- it has six floors of exhibitions so you will walk away feeling inspired by something from the museum. One of my favorite parts of the museum is the Stories of Cinema exhibit that explored different components of moviemaking. I believe, by learning just a little more about the process and methods of filmmaking, you will enjoy the content you watch even more. Seeing all the beautiful work done by these filmmakers made me appreciate moving pictures so much more. With a little more knowledge about what it takes to tell a story through this medium, our movie-watching experience becomes even better. You might start to notice how directors use certain techniques to tell their stories, or being able to spot certain editing techniques or notice the importance of sound design...(LIKE EASTER EGGS!!) we become much more engaged in our movie-watching experience. It’s the same in other areas of life. If we know a little bit more about the background of a painting or the story of the artist, this knowledge makes the art piece even more interesting to look at. Sometimes things are only boring because we can’t get past that surface-level experience. There’s just so much material at the museum that it was impossible for us to see everything in one visit. We spent at least 4 hours walking through the exhibits, and I’m pretty sure we still didn’t see them all. Be sure to check out this museum the next time you visit LA. Thanks for watching my video!
