In this video I set up a brand new breeding tank for Caridina pure red line Crystal Red Shrimp, using an undergravel filter (UGF) and a simple mini aquascape. The tank is a 60x40x40cm deep low-iron glass tank (8mm) that I grabbed from Amazon for about 100 with delivery, and I was honestly very pleased with the quality. I build the UGF area at the back with glass partitions, fit the Ista UGF plates (yes, I had to trim one plate about 1cm to make it fit), then add ADA Amazonia soil, bacterial powder, and a mineral powder to kick-start bacteria growth. Then comes the real part: waiting. From my experience ADA Amazonia can take at least 10 weeks because it leaches ammonia, and I show the full 12-week cycle with updates. I also hit a classic problem—green water algae bloom—tried blocking light (didn’t work), then used Accu-Clear to clump particles and clear it fast (but I warn you: don’t use that with shrimp). I plant HC Cuba carpet and keep it simple—no stem plants in a breeding setup because they chew through the soil nutrients too fast. Before shrimp, I run guppies for a couple of weeks because fish poop helps beneficial bacteria and biofilm. At 12 weeks, the tank is matured, I do a massive water change to drop nitrates (they were around 20ppm), add a Bucephalandra centerpiece, then acclimate and introduce PRL shrimp from two different sellers to mix genetics. Simple, mature, lots of natural food—exactly what Caridina need.
