Before a single timber goes up, before joinery or raising day, everything depends on one thing: the layout. In today’s video, my brother and I are working through one of the most critical steps of our timber frame building project — laying out the structure on the ground. We’re setting the corners, marking the locations for the foundation piers, digging the holes, and installing concrete form tubes. Every measurement matters, because if the foundation isn’t square and level, nothing that comes after it will be either. This is the slow, careful work that often gets overlooked, but it’s what makes a building last. We take our time to square everything up, check level, and make sure the layout is right before moving forward with the build. If you’re interested in timber framing, traditional building methods, or seeing how real projects come together step by step, this video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of preparation that separates a good build from a bad one. ✨ In this video you’ll see: • Laying out the footprint of a timber frame building • Setting corners and establishing square • Marking and digging holes for foundation piers • Installing concrete form tubes • Checking level and layout before construction continues • Why foundation layout is the most important part of the build This is part of our ongoing timber frame series, where we’re documenting the entire process from raw materials to a finished building. Thanks for following along — the real work is just getting started.
