We Turned Back Just In Time!! New Zealand’s Landslides 😳😱🤯

RTW S6 EP4 | Northland Coastal Roads After the Storm In this episode, we attempt to ride a remote coastal road in New Zealand’s Far North, travelling from Russell toward Helena Bay. After recent extreme weather across Northland, roads in this region had been hit by flooding, slips, and closures that were being reported locally at the time. As we ride deeper along the coast, it becomes clear how fresh the damage is. Mud, debris, washed sections of road, and multiple blockages force us to slow right down. Although we don’t witness active landslides, many of the slips appear to have happened very recently. Eventually, we reach a washed-out bridge and have no option but to turn back. We’re riding two-up on our BMW R1300 GSA as part of our ride around the world, and this episode shows the reality of travelling in New Zealand when weather conditions change fast. It’s a reminder of how quickly road conditions can deteriorate, especially on lesser-used coastal routes in Northland. For motorcyclists, this episode highlights real-world decision-making on damaged roads. For campervan travellers and road-trippers, it’s a useful look at why checking local updates and road conditions matters, particularly after heavy rain and storms.
