Port Arthur, Tasmania — Where Britain Sent Its Convicts | S7 EP09 In this episode of our around the world motorcycle journey, we visit Port Arthur in Tasmania — one of the most important historic sites in Australia, and a place every Australian should experience at least once. Port Arthur Historic Site sits on the Tasman Peninsula and is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites. It began in 1830 as a small timber station before becoming one of the most significant convict settlements in Van Diemen’s Land, known for punishment, isolation, hard labour and survival. Walking through Port Arthur is difficult to put into words. The ruins are beautiful, the landscape is peaceful, but the history is incredibly dark. From the old penitentiary and convict-built structures to the stories of those who lived, worked and suffered here, it gives a very different understanding of Australia’s past. Port Arthur is also remembered for the tragedy of 28 April 1996, when 35 people were killed in one of the darkest days in modern Australian history. Visiting this place today is not just about sightseeing — it is about respect, reflection and understanding why Port Arthur still means so much to so many Australians. Tasmania has given us wild roads, beautiful coastlines and unforgettable scenery, but Port Arthur gave us something deeper — a powerful reminder that travel is not only about where you go, but what you learn along the way.
