Motorcycle Theft Is On The Rise! - RTW S6 EP10 What started as a beautiful day riding from Kaikōura to Christchurch along the scenic Inland Kaikōura Road (Route 70) took an unexpected turn. In this episode of our round-the-world motorcycle journey, we leave the rugged coastline of Kaikōura and head south through one of New Zealand’s most underrated riding roads. The 70 Road is pure motorcycle touring bliss — rolling farmland, mountain backdrops, quiet open roads and endless curves on our BMW R1300 GSA. We spend the afternoon exploring Christchurch, a city known for its resilience, relaxed atmosphere and reputation as one of the safer, more liveable cities in New Zealand. Walking through the centre, riding the historic tram, and soaking up the calm energy, it felt like the perfect South Island day. But as the episode unfolds, we return to something we never expected to see. For the first time in over 40,000km of riding around the world, across Europe, Central Asia and now New Zealand, our motorcycle had been damaged while parked. Two locks broken. Our GPS targeted. A reminder that motorcycle theft and tampering can happen anywhere in the world — even in places widely considered safe. We want to be very clear: Christchurch felt safe, welcoming and calm throughout our time there. What happened to us was simply bad luck. Incidents like this are rare, and New Zealand remains one of the most incredible countries we’ve ridden through on our global motorcycle adventure.
