RTW S6 EP7 | Realities of Motorcycle Touring in New Zealand We set out from Gisborne to Napier on our BMW R1300 GSA expecting a classic summer day on the East Coast — open roads, sunshine and coastal views. What we got was wet weather, heavy skies and real-time reminders of how unpredictable New Zealand can be. In this episode we ride through changing conditions, explore the beautifully restored Art Deco streets of Napier, and soak in what motorcycle touring really feels like on this part of the North Island. Right now across New Zealand there are widespread weather disruptions from heavy rain, flooding and slips. Roads in parts of the North Island have been blocked by slips, states of emergency remain in some regions, and communities continue clean-up efforts after recent storms. Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne — where we’re riding today — have been under weather warnings with flooding and slips affecting travel, infrastructure and local life. This is what motorcycle touring in real conditions looks like — adapting, pushing on, and discovering places on two wheels even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
