I had not heard about them until I started learning about some instructional methods for teaching multilingual students in my ESL coursework (I'm getting a second masters in curriculum and instruction). Going through this process has made me a stronger educator and it's yet again reminded me how difficult and complex English is to learn. Phrasal verbs are a verb construction where a verb is combined with an adverb or preposition to make a totally new verb semantically. In this video, I walk you through what phrasal verbs are and also give you lots of examples. Consider the phrasal verb "work out." The verb "work" and the preposition "out" are put together to make a new verb that does not have the same meaning as the original words. "Work out" means to exercise, but it can also mean being successful at something (ie "I hope this job works out") or it can mean to calculate (ie "I need to work out this math problem"). Students need to simply memorize these meanings because you cannot figure them out by looking at the words themselves. When I first learned about phrasal verbs, all I could think about was students with communication disorders who struggle with verbs and prepositions and then the added complexity of non-literal language is layered on top. The worst part about phrasal verbs is that they are extremely common in English. In the PDF I developed for you (click below to download) I compiled this list of 150 phrasal verbs (!!), but it is by no means an exhaustive list! There are quite literally hundreds more.
