We often see what we SHOULD do as coach : in this video I look at three things I'd never do: 1) Never promise to guarantee a client a result. For example saying that someone would make x amount of money or guaranteeing that they'd get a job. We can't guarantee results as the real results come from the client doing the work. A coach can offer support, ask questions, hold space, and challenge, it is the client who must take action. When we guarantee specific results we are removing the clients agency and autonomy and making it more about them than us. As a coach you can guarantee how you will be in the process, such as being present, exploring patterns, challenging, helping the client achieve clarity and providing spaces high in emotional safety and trust. 2) I would never work with trauma: As a coach I'm not trained to work with trauma and I think it's really important to be clear on boundaries and guard rails to support the client. If a client needs support with trauma ethically the best thing to do is to refer them to someone who is skilled in this area and can support. 3) Never make it about you : Some coaches believe that they have all of the answers yet in reality it's not about the coaches ego and what we know it's about the client. I love the MCC (master certified coach) guidelines from the ICF which say coaches need to be okay to hold space for "not knowing" and this space is genuinely curious and client focused. I'd love to know what else you think a coach shouldn't do? This is based on my opinion as an ICF master certified coach who has worked with 1000s of clients and runs a highly respected coach training school.
