A coach's role is to support, hear, and validate clients to help them feel seen and acknowledged. It is not to get "onto their side" or create an "us versus them" dynamic however I have seen so many social media posts about how coaches have "agreed" with their clients. Whilst this is always from the clients perspective it's made me reflect on whether it's coaching or collision. Collusion occurs when a coach agrees with a client's decisions or opinions, essentially becoming a part of the client's decision-making process. This can manifest as the coach agreeing that a client's boss is "evil" or that a client "should" be taking a specific action Avoiding "Outsourced" Autonomy: Clients may seek approval or verification for major life decisions, such as moving countries or changing careers. Coaches must ensure clients maintain their own agency rather than "outsourcing their autonomy" to the coach Maintaining Professional Boundaries: Coaches should remain non-judgmental, impartial and maintain positive regard while allowing clients to make their own choices. It is important to step back and reflect if a client is asking for an opinion or verification. The Importance of Supervision: Working with a coaching supervisor is recommended to help explore where a coach may be consciously or unconsciously overstepping professional boundaries. Remember your role is about supporting and challenging your client not colluding with them!
