Visualisation is a powerful personal tool which can be used personally and as a coach. In this video I share how we can tailor how to use visualisation (or any tool) so it meets our clients needs and preferences because we can't all close our eyes and see the future in the same way. When our brain is in positive affect imagining or connecting with a future point in time which is desirable to us we have more energy and blood flow to the areas of the brain that are responsible for decision making, problem solving and focus. There is evidence that cognitively we can use more of our brain and being in a positive future state has been linked to enhanced thinking and optimism. Knowing this it can be a great tool to spark inspiration : the "classic" visualisation might be guided going to a future point in time where you might be closing your eyes and imagining where you want to go. For someone like me who can't visualise I find tapping into my emotions and how I want to feel much more effective. If you're coaching always be lead by your client and their preferences. Or could be using an exercise such as "best possible future self". This could be written as a reflective tool for example: When you get to a point in time where you have achieved what you've wanted to achieve reflect on these questions: - What have you achieved? - What are you celebrating? - What strengths and skills got you here? - What are you thinking? - What are you feeling? - What can you learn from this? Or you can ask questions linking to the future to help your client find the answers using their language and what they know of their preferences. Or you might want to look at techniques such as vision boards which "value tag" what is important to you for your RAS : reticular activating system.
