(1984) is a spoof comedy film directed by Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers, David and Jerry Zucker, the team behind Airplane! The film stars Val Kilmer in his first feature role as Nick Rivers, an American rock 'n' roll singer who finds himself embroiled in a resistance movement while touring East Germany. What begins as a musical tour quickly turns into an outrageous adventure as Nick joins forces with a beautiful freedom fighter named Hillary Flammond to stop a sinister plot involving mind control and underwater weapons. The film parodies both Elvis Presley-style musicals and Cold War espionage thrillers, blending slapstick humor, absurd sight gags, and non-stop one-liners. From surreal visual jokes and intentionally bad dubbing to elaborate puns and unexpected set pieces, the movie embraces a nonsensical tone that plays with genre clichés.
