Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Departed is a 2006 neo-noir crime thriller and a definitive masterpiece of modern American cinema. A brilliant reimagining of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, the plot is set in the gritty underbelly of South Boston. It follows two parallel moles: Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), a state trooper assigned to infiltrate the ruthless Irish mob, and Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), a groomed criminal who has successfully climbed the ranks within the Massachusetts State Police Special Investigations Unit. Both operate under the looming shadow of the psychotic, unpredictable crime boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). The narrative builds an agonizing level of psychological suspense as the police and the mob simultaneously realize they have a rat in their ranks. The Oscar-winning screenplay by William Monahan tracks the desperate race between Billy and Colin as they try to uncover each others identity to save themselves. As Billy handles the severe psychological toll of deep undercover work under handlers Captain Queenan (Martin Sheen) and the abrasive Staff Sergeant Dignam (Mark Wahlberg), Colin manipulates police resources from the inside. Both men eventually fall for the same police psychiatrist, Madolyn Madden (Vera Farmiga), tightening the knots of their intertwined, duplicitous lives. Renowned for its razor-sharp dialogue, visceral kinetic editing by Thelma Schoonmaker, and a rock-infused score by Howard Shore, the movie explores themes of identity, systemic corruption, and the loss of the soul. The production balances massive blockbuster energy with standard gritty realism, culminating in an uncompromising, hyper-violent climax where no one is safe. The film achieved massive commercial and critical success, earning four Academy Awards, including Scorseses first win for Best Director. Ultimately, it is a masterclass in the crime genre.
