Directed by Leigh Whannell, Upgrade is a 2018 cyberpunk action-thriller that blends revenge tropes with high-concept sci-fi. Set in the near future, the plot follows Grey Trace, a technophobe played by Logan Marshall-Green, who is paralyzed after a brutal mugging that kills his wife. He is offered a secret, experimental cure: an artificial intelligence chip called STEM. Once implanted, the chip restores his mobility and provides him with superhuman combat abilities, which Grey uses to hunt down those responsible for the attack. The narrative evolves into a gritty tech-noir as Grey realizes that STEM has its own voice and agenda. The screenplay is celebrated for its inventive camera work, which mimics the mechanical, precise movements of the AI during fight sequences. As Grey descends deeper into the criminal underworld, the film shifts from a standard revenge story into a disturbing exploration of body horror and the loss of human agency.
