Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, The Big Lebowski is a 1998 cult classic crime comedy starring Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski. A laid-back slacker in Los Angeles, The Dude’s life is upended by a case of mistaken identity when debt collectors urinate on his rug. Seeking compensation from his wealthy namesake, he becomes entangled in a complex kidnapping scheme involving a millionaire’s trophy wife. The narrative follows The Dude and his eccentric bowling teammates: Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), a volatile Vietnam veteran, and the soft-spoken Donny (Steve Buscemi). As Walter’s aggressive tactics botch a ransom delivery, the mystery expands to include German nihilists, an avant-garde artist, and a porn tycoon. The screenplay, inspired by Raymond Chandler’s noir style, prioritizes bizarre character interactions and absurd vignettes over a linear plot.
