Directed by John Singleton, Shaft is a 2000 action crime thriller and a "soft reboot" of the 1971 blaxploitation classic. The plot stars Samuel L. Jackson as John Shaft, a charismatic and tough NYPD detective who is the nephew of the original hero. The narrative centers on the arrest of Walter Wade Jr. (Christian Bale), the spoiled son of a real estate tycoon, for the racially motivated murder of a young Black man. When Wade flees the country and later returns to buy his way out of justice, Shaft resigns from the force to pursue him as a private investigator. The narrative shifts into a high-stakes manhunt as Shaft searches for the only eyewitness to the crime, a waitress named Diane (Toni Collette). To eliminate her, Wade hires a ruthless Dominican drug lord named Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright), leading to a violent collision between the criminal underworld and Shaft’s street-smart justice. The screenplay balances gritty urban action with a charismatic performance by Jackson, who perfectly embodies the "cool under pressure" archetype.
