Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 epic space opera and the first standalone anthology film in the franchise. Set immediately before the events of A New Hope, the plot follows Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of a reluctant Imperial scientist, who is recruited by the Rebel Alliance. Alongside Rebel intelligence officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), she leads a desperate mission to steal the design schematics for the Death Star, the Galactic Empires ultimate planet-killing weapon. The narrative adopts a gritty, ground-level perspective of the galactic civil war, distinguishing it from the traditional Skywalker saga. The screenplay focuses on a diverse team of outcasts, including the blind warrior Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and the cynical reprogrammed droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). They trace the weapons fatal flaw back to Jyns father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen). The film culminates in the massive, high-stakes Battle of Scarif, featuring intense beach warfare and a legendary, terrifying appearance by Darth Vader that remains a franchise high point. Renowned for its dark tone and seamless visual integration with the original 1977 film, the movie explores themes of sacrifice, hope, and the moral ambiguities of war.
