The plot stars Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye Pierce and Elliott Gould as Trapper John McIntyre, two brilliant but irreverent surgeons at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. To survive the psychological toll of endless casualties, they employ a brand of cynical humor and rebellion against military protocol, medical bureaucracy, and religious hypocrisy. The narrative is episodic, focusing on the chaotic environment of the camp rather than a linear military objective. The screenplay, which won an Oscar for Ring Lardner Jr., famously uses dark satire to critique institutional authority, highlighted by the Suicide is Painless theme. As the doctors clash with the rigid Major Frank Burns and Hot Lips Houlihan, the film explores the desperate need for human connection and sanity amidst the carnage.
