Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the story follows Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot burdened by guilt after surviving both the war and an early encounter with Godzilla on Odo Island. When Godzilla resurfaces—now mutated by U.S. nuclear tests—Shikishima joins a civilian-led effort to stop the monster before it can destroy what's left of Japan. The film explores themes of trauma, redemption, and resilience. Shikishima's personal journey mirrors Japan's struggle to rebuild from the devastation of war. Alongside a crew of veterans and civilians, he devises a daring plan to defeat Godzilla using outdated naval vessels and a risky strategy involving Freon tanks and explosive decompression.
