Set in the year 2154, the story depicts a deeply divided future where the wealthy live in luxury on a pristine space station called Elysium, while the rest of humanity struggles in poverty on an overpopulated, polluted Earth. After Max is exposed to lethal radiation at his factory job, he takes on a dangerous mission to reach Elysium, where advanced medical technology could save his life. The film explores themes of class inequality, immigration, healthcare access, and social justice through a dystopian lens. Max is fitted with a powerful exoskeleton to survive his mission, putting him in direct conflict with ruthless Elysium security forces led by Secretary Delacourt, played by Jodie Foster, and her mercenary enforcer Kruger, portrayed by Sharlto Copley. As Max fights his way toward Elysium, his actions begin to challenge the entire system that keeps the privileged elite separate from the suffering masses.
