Directed by Andrew Davis, A Perfect Murder is a 1998 neo-noir crime thriller and a modern reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder. The plot stars Michael Douglas as Steven Taylor, a wealthy but struggling Wall Street financier who discovers his wife, Emily (Gwyneth Paltrow), is having an affair with a struggling artist named David Shaw (Viggo Mortensen). Rather than seeking a divorce, Steven blackmails David—who has a secret criminal past—into murdering Emily so he can inherit her massive fortune to save his failing business. The narrative evolves into a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse as the "perfect" plan falls apart, leading to a web of double-crosses and blackmail. The screenplay balances sophisticated suspense with gritty urban tension, moving from sleek Manhattan penthouses to David's bohemian loft.
