The whole idea is a compact creation: Digitakt II and Octatrack doing the heavy lifting, with the Yamaha Reface CP as the “top synth” that I can swap out anytime. I’m building drums, getting a groove going, and then I start sampling the CP—pitching it, filtering out lows, and adding chorus until it turns into this vibey texture that just sits right. From there it’s all about movement and happy accidents. I mess with retrigs so things aren’t this static “tss,” then I get weird with slicing: I take a longer sample, set it up over 128 steps, and use random slice selection so it jumps around without losing the pocket. I also lean on triggerless tricks to sneak in delay sends only once in a while, so the effects feel alive instead of always-on. There’s a moment where I grab a sample and it’s like, “oh yes, that’s the sound,” and I turn it into two different parts—one looped, one just the intro—then I tame it with reverb, filter, and a bit of pumping compression to glue it all together.
