Some PL filters have marker two dots on their beveled edges which can be aligned by turning the filter dial. One would think that these indicate maximum polarizing effect BUT THEY MAY NOT: They don't always align to max polarization at this point. Only one of my four filters actually lined up like this, the other three PL filters lined up differently. So my tip of the day is to physically hold each of your filters up to your eye and look through whilst turning the filter and then marking where the max polarization effect is.
