I’ve been putting the LEMS Outlander boots through real trail time for about two years, and honestly, they’ve surprised me more than any other boot I’ve owned. They’re lightweight and flexible—almost more like a shoe than a traditional backpacking boot—but I’ve still taken them on rugged terrain with a heavy pack, including 15-mile days and steep descents. The big takeaway for me is comfort: these are the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned, and they’ve kept my feet happy even on long downhill stretches where my toes usually start to hurt in other boots. In this review I break down what’s worked and what hasn’t. They’re zero-drop with a wide toe box, which gives me a more natural step and better toe splay for traction and ground feel. They’ve also been genuinely waterproof for me—no Gore-Tex, just LEMS’ waterproof fabric with a gusseted tongue and waterproof lining that runs through the inside—so I’ve used them in snow, mud, water, and desert heat without leakage. After a lot of boulder hopping, the tread is wearing but still stays grippy. My main gripe is the laces: if I don’t snug them down (or double-tie), they can work loose after about a mile.
