In this mini review, I take a look at what might be one of the most powerful CPUs you can get your hands on right now: AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D. This is AMD’s super flagship with 16 cores / 32 threads, up to 5.7GHz boost, 170W TDP, and a ridiculous 144MB of V-Cache. It doesn’t come with a stock cooler (no surprise), so I dropped it into a compact mATX build on an ASUS TUF board with a 240mm AIO, 32GB 6000MHz RAM, and an RX 970 XT—because yes, you gotta go red with red. For gaming, I focused on 1080p where CPU impact is easiest to see. I was hitting around 316–317 FPS average in CS2 and about 470 FPS in Rainbow Six Siege X on 1080p High, with still-crazy numbers on Ultra. Single-player AAA is also super strong: Cyberpunk 2077 stayed in the 170–180+ FPS range at 1080p High while driving, and even at 1440p High I still saw the CPU doing some work. And if you’re spending this kind of money, creation matters too—so I compared it against a Core Ultra 9 285K, where the 9950X3D pulled ahead in Blender and V-Ray. Thermals and power were totally reasonable for this class: around 68°C in Siege, mid-70s in Cyberpunk, and low-80s in Cinebench R23 on a 240mm AIO, with power hovering ~110–120W in games and ~200W in Cinebench. Overall, it’s a quick but solid look at why this CPU is a monster for both high-FPS gaming and creator workloads.
