About This Video

Hello friends, Heidi here from Rain Country. God is good all the time. In this video I’m sharing several practical uses for homemade upcycled jean quilts, plus a quick run-through of how I put them together without getting overly fancy. When I’m working with denim, I keep it simple and use rectangles (I use a template Patrick made for me) so I can work around pockets, belt loops, tags, rivets, and all those interesting details that make an upcycled quilt fun. For the backing I usually use flannel—often from clearance fabric back when it was cheap, or even flannel sheets—because it makes the quilt soft, warm, and heavy without me needing batting. Then I get into why I love these quilts so much for frugal homestead life: they’re inexpensive, durable, and easy to maintain. Of course they’re great on beds and couches, but I also use them like washable “throw rugs” to protect our light carpet, and I even made one specifically to cover our chest freezer. That freezer quilt makes the space look nicer, adds insulation, and can help hold the cold longer during a power outage. And when a denim quilt finally wears through, I don’t toss it—I patch it with more old jeans and, if needed, put on a fresh border. That’s the beauty of denim: you can keep it going for years and years.
