About This Video

Well guys, I’m back again—this one is a down-and-dirty homestead equipment repair on my 1976 Case 450 dozer. In this video I’m replacing the track adjuster and the spring housing, and I’m doing it out here in rain country where rust is always trying to win. I took a scaler and cleaned everything up, knocked off the flaking rust, degreased it, primed it, and then I put a thick bed-liner type coating on the housing to give it a better chance of surviving. I also talk through why I chose to replace the spring pack even though the old one still had some life—because the outside was badly pitted and I didn’t trust what I couldn’t see. I install the spring assembly with new bolts (stainless with anti-seize because galling is real), and I hit a snag when the new assembly is more robust than the old one—meaning I had to run to the store for a longer bolt. After that, the “fun part” is getting the track back together without my telehandler or tractors on site. I walk you through my improvised plan using rope and a comealong, lining up the jaws, and bolting it back together. Then I set track tension by pumping grease into the adjuster and measuring sag, aiming for about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. I ended up right around 1 1/4 inches, which is perfect—then it’s on to the other side, faster, because I learned a few things the hard way.
