In this outdoor summer refresh, I’m taking you around our “new-to-us” backyard and showing how I’m making it feel cozy and relaxing on a budget—because we’ve only been here a couple months, and I’ve been way more focused on the inside spaces until now. Our house is kind of architecturally unique (which makes the outdoor layout a little… confusing), but I’m leaning into it and creating little zones that actually make us want to be outside. The biggest project was tackling the garden pond that came with the house. I’ve never had a fish pond before, but I was so excited to figure it out—especially because there are two goldfish (Herby and Harriet). My husband pressure washed and cleaned it out, we added a new pond fountain and a remote-controlled pond light, plus some simple solar pathway lights to make the area feel more modern and finished. I also share what we’re doing (and not doing) while we wait on bigger backyard plans—like saving up for an inground pool next summer instead of forcing an above-ground pool that doesn’t really fit our family. You’ll also see the string lights I added for that glowy nighttime vibe, my egg chair setup for morning coffee, and a real-life moment where a bird built a nest on our deck—so I’m adjusting my plans and letting nature do its thing.
