On today’s project I’m out on the porch swapping out my old Blink video doorbell for a Ring video doorbell camera, and I’m also adding the Ring Chime. I’ve got kind of an on again, off again relationship with that Blink—yeah it works, but it does a lot of stuff I don’t really like. One of the big issues for me was the “chime” situation. I had to mess around with extra devices (or just Alexa) to get a real doorbell experience, and to me that’s the whole purpose of a doorbell. In the video I unbox the Ring (mine’s a refurbished one from Amazon) and show what comes in the box: the camera, rechargeable battery, charging cable, mounting hardware, and the wedge plate if you need to angle it. Then I pull the old doorbell, use a vinyl siding mounting plate I grabbed from Lowe’s, mark the holes, drill pilot holes, and run the included screws in snug. After the battery’s in and the faceplate is back on, I finish it off with the security screw (they include the special screwdriver). From there I plug in the chime and handle the setup in the Ring app. I test it at the end—chime rings inside, and Alexa announces someone’s at the front door. That’s it: a clean DIY install that actually works the way a doorbell should.
