Last year I helped him with the front yard, and knowing he uses a walker and wheelchair, I expected he’d be inside—but when I arrived, the house was dark, no lights were on, nobody answered the door, and there were barely any footprints in the snow. I walked the property, even checked an abandoned camper, but still found no sign of him. I decided to start the work anyway, keeping an eye on the house in case he needed help. While mulching, I hit a hidden stump and fell off the mini skid steer, hurt my back, and later got tangled in a buried fence, but pushed through and kept clearing the overgrowth. Eventually I went back up to the house and knocked again—this time he finally answered. What he said stopped me in my tracks: “I heard you knocking earlier… I just didn’t know how to answer. I’m sorry. Thank you for not giving up on me.” It absolutely crushed me. After finishing the job, I showed him the photos and he was speechless, thanking me over and over. And just when I thought the day was done, I surprised him with something that left him completely speechless and in tears. This one hit me hard.
