Barndominium Homestead | Affordable Living for Financial Freedom

In this video, we are going to share our plans for building our Barndominium Homestead as we continue our Financial Freedom (FIRE) journey! We are exploring many different builders for our homestead new construction and are trying to be conscious of our budget. The 3 options that we are looking at right now are: 1) Schumacher Homes 2) America’s Home Place 3) Custom Barndominum Build with a local General Contractor The first two builders that we mentioned are the traditional route, where it would be more hands off and we wouldn’t be able to do any of the work ourselves. Now onto the 3rd option, which is a non-traditional build called a Barndominium. A Barndominium is “In simple terms, a metal building that has inside living quarters. These are very affordable, energy-efficient and low maintenance homes,” according to Metal Building Homes, a company that specializes in new-construction barndominiums. Many of these homes feature energy-efficient windows, stained concrete floors, engineered concrete slabs, efficient plumbing and high vaulted ceilings. Think of a plain-designed warehouse with a front porch and oversized garage door. The same concept is incorporated into a barndominium as a low-cost, simple-to-build dwelling, but with an upgraded exterior compared to a warehouse. There are many Advantages of a barndominum build including affordability, durability and flexibility. Barndominiums have gained popularity ever since Chip and Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper took a barn that horses were living in and converted it to a beautiful living space. Like we mentioned before there is a Cost savings, and with the land being deeded to us, it just makes sense. We walk through a number of CONS for building a barndominium including the fact that finncing would be more challenging than a traditional build and the construction costs would not be guaranteed like they would with a larger builder. We walk through different homestead, farmhouse and barndominium floor plans that we will work into our design.
