Y’all…I was stressed. In this video I tried to wash my mini twists on my fine, low porosity natural hair, and I’m not even going to sugar coat it—this was one of those “what have I done?” moments. My scalp was crying, so I went for it anyway: I split my hair down the middle, put everything into four loose chunky braids, shampooed twice, and then tried to dry them enough to sleep (microfiber towel + blow dryer). The braids held up, but the real drama showed up the next day. After the wash, the twists started trying to entangle into each other, and I realized my twists were just too small (and too old) to be doing all that. So I chose option two: redo them. I retwisted my whole head, made the twists bigger by combining two into one, and went “less is more” with products—mainly water + gel, and just a smidge of grease on the ends (not my scalp) to cut down on tangling and nodding. My biggest takeaway: washing mini twists too late (I waited about 3 weeks) can turn into a time-consuming fix, but that root braid method really did save the day.
