In this video, I’m breaking down why your “protective style” might not be protecting anything—especially if you have fine natural hair. Protective styling is my jam, but I’ve learned (the hard way) that just putting your hair away doesn’t automatically mean you’re retaining length. While I’m getting ready and throwing on my headband wig, I walk you through the three biggest reasons people take down a style and end up with shedding, breakage, and a dry, angry scalp. First, we have moisturizing (and yes, I know it can be hard depending on the style). Some styles—like faux locs—make it easy to access your scalp but not your strands, so your hair can be “hidden” and still be struggling. Next is tension. If your style is pulling, giving you a headache, or you can literally see the stress on your hairline, it’s not worth your edges—take it out or speak up at install. And the last one is a big one: not taking enough breaks between styles. I talk about the “4 weeks in, 4 weeks out” method I read from a licensed dermatologist and share my own experience keeping Marley twists in way too long—product buildup, dryness, and shedding that had me like…yeah, never again. Fine hair needs balance: moisture, low tension, and actual rest.
