In today’s watercolor painting session, I’m painting some watercolor magnolias and a little mixedmedia landscape while trying out new watercolor papers from Ohuhu. I tested both the hot press and cold press versions of the paper and explored different watercolor techniques along the way, including wet-on-wet backgrounds, watercolor layering, lifting techniques, masking fluid, mixed media details, and even a soft bokeh-inspired light effect. For the magnolia paintings, I experimented with glowing watercolor backgrounds, watercolor layering techniques, and masking fluid to preserve lighter details while building rich washes around the flowers. I also explored lifting paint to create soft textures and dreamy circles of light inspired by bokeh photography effects. Later in the video, I switched to the hot press watercolor paper to create a loose watercolor landscape sketch using a mixed media approach with watercolor, colored pencils and gouache. I love using hot press paper for mixed media work because of the smoother surface and softer finish.
